Senior Scientist, Technical Solutions

General Summary

The Senior Scientist, Technical Solutions will directly support the Technical Solutions Hub (TSH) in the execution and reporting of research to both fill the innovation pipeline and resolve technical issues for business continuity.  The successful candidate will be able to fully understand and explain the importance of basic scientific principles as well as experimental design, and then clearly manage and communicate results to project teams.  The research work involves, but is not limited to, new processing technologies, new ingredients, thorough understanding of current thermal processing technologies and procedures, and generation of future-focused technical insights.  Training will be provided on all equipment and methodologies.  The ability to work collaboratively with external partners to supplement current processing and ingredient technologies is required.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate excellent leadership and communication skills, as they will be required to lead cross-functional TSH projects to successful conclusions while navigating the team through technical challenges.  Knowledge of Agile methodology is a plus but is not required.  In this role, you will report to the Director, Technical Solutions Hub.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Independently lead cross-functional teams to execute projects of high technical complexity, leveraging Agile methodology (40%)

  • Leverage the Campbell’s Insights Engine (a collection of AI-based technical insights tools) to monitor & share technical trends and generate technical insights for innovation initiatives (20%)

  • Execute benchtop and analytical work (20%)

  • Proactively apply scientific knowledge and technical skills to develop proof of concept for innovation ideas (10%)

Job Complexity / Scope

  • The individual must be able to deal with ambiguity, adapt to change and persevere as business strategies evolve and insights are gathered.

  • This individual must be able to manage various groups of stakeholders with key responsibilities including:

    working closely with Campbell’s Meals & Beverages and Snacks division teams on ingredient needs & technical solutions,

    working closely with new technology companies to identify, define and commission new equipment to deliver improved quality at lower costs, and

    leveraging and sharing internal and external expertise with business and R&D teams to resolve technical challenges.

  • Projects will include working with cross-functional teams and sharing analytical results, which will require effective communication skills (both written and verbal) and the ability to leverage each member’s individual expertise on short timelines to execute critical tasks and drive faster decision making.

  • Independently develop new methodologies as needed to execute projects.

  • Consistently and clearly communicate (both written and oral) the results of analytical work to drive faster and better decisions for projects.

  • Learn the Campbell R&D Agile methodology and train other team members.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science or related field with a minimum of 7 years of experience or Master's degree in Food Science is preferred with minimum of 5 years of experience.

  • Proficient technical R&D expertise with skills in commercializing products/processes in the manufacturing environment.

  • Experience with commercialization of snacks is preferred.

  • Strong communication and influencing skills with the ability to express highly technical ideas and concepts both in written and verbal format; excellent presentation skills are required. 

  • Superior documentation of work results, data, and analysis required.

  • Excellent analytical and risk-based decision-making skills required.

  • Project management experience with ability to analyze data, summarize findings, and coordinate cross-functional teamwork.  Experience with Agile methodology is a plus.

  • Influence/communicate with functional partners and clients in a way that fosters collaboration.  

  • Ability to work with ambiguity and seek creative solutions; ability to react rapidly to changes in direction.

  • Highly effective team player; willing to contribute in a wide variety of areas.

Working Conditions

  • Physical ability to handle weights of approximately thirty pounds.   

  • Ability to walk/stand up at times for up to 75% of the workday.

  • Willingness and ability to taste and evaluate a wide range of food products and ingredients.

  • Kitchen, Pilot Plant, and manufacturing plant environment exposes the employee to heat and hot food products, coolers, freezers, requiring the use of personal protective equipment.

  • Anticipated travel of 10-20% to R&D locations, manufacturing plants, or vendor locations. 


Compensation and Benefits:

The base salary range for this full-time, salaried position is between $85,900.00 - $158,900.00.

An individual’s base pay depends on a number of factors, such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Total pay may include other forms of compensation, such as a performance-based bonus and other short- and long-term incentives. In addition, we offer competitive health, dental, 401(k), and wellness benefits beginning on one’s first day of employment.
