Following historic win, New Jersey prepares for Sherrill era
Mikie Sherrill captured the governorship with a decisive victory Nov. 4, marking a historic moment in the state’s political history.
Sherrill, a U.S. representative for New Jersey’s 11th District, defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli with more than 56% of the vote, becoming the 57th governor of the Garden State. The win also represents the first time since 1961 that one party has won three consecutive gubernatorial elections in New Jersey — and makes Sherrill the state’s first female Democratic governor. Sherrill’s running mate, Centenary University President Dale Caldwell, becomes the first male lieutenant governor elected since the voters approved a constitutional amendment creating the post in 2005.
While polls had indicated a tightening race to succeed term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy, the outcome was much different – with Sherrill delivering a resounding victory.
Sherrill’s early vote momentum carried through to Election Day, with historic turnout reported in major Democratic strongholds such as Essex and Hudson counties. Overall turnout was the highest in New Jersey for a gubernatorial race since 1997.
The governor-elect’s historic performance also included reversing recent Republican gains – flipping five counties from red to blue versus the 2024 cycle: Cumberland, Gloucester, Atlantic, Morris, and Passaic. Overall, while Ciattarelli held some counties, all of 21 shifted toward the Democrats in this election.
The election also marked a strong night for Democrats down-ballot. In addition to winning the gubernatorial race, the party fared well in the Assembly races, picking up at least three seats, to secure a supermajority. And that trend was also seen nationally in races in Virginia and beyond – setting the stage for the all-important 2026 mid-terms.
‘I hear you’
Sherrill addressed supporters Tuesday night in East Brunswick after the race was called.
“New Jersey — they always say we are loud, but man, with your vote, you guys just screamed from the rooftops and people around the country hear you. And I hear you, too.
“This was a tough fight and this is a tough state. But I know you, New Jersey. I have fought for you. I’ve spoken with thousands of you over this last year. I know your struggles, your hopes and your dreams.
“So serving you is worth any tough fight I have to take on, and I am so incredibly honored to be your next governor.”
Sherrill acknowledged her opponent:
“I know how hard it can be to serve in these times, so I want to recognize Jack Ciattarelli for stepping up. And you guys know I love our history, and our state motto has always stuck with me. In 1777, New Jersey was one of the first states to choose a motto: ‘Liberty and Prosperity.’ A demand for freedom from oppression and a commitment to creating opportunity and a better future. That idea has defined us for almost 250 years.”
She then articulated her broader vision:
“We see clearly how important liberty is. We know that no one in our great state is safe when our neighbors are targeted, ignoring the law and the Constitution. And prosperity is equally essential. Liberty alone is not enough if the government makes it impossible for you to feed your family, to get a good education, or to get a good job. In this country, that shouldn’t be too much to ask. But right now, all of it seems at risk. Governors have never mattered more. And in this state, I am determined to build prosperity for all of our citizens.
“So, New Jersey, to quote the Boss: ‘The future is now. Roll up your sleeves and let your passion flow. The country we carry in our hearts is waiting.’”
Ciattarelli congratulates Sherrill
Ciattarelli delivered remarks from his Bridgewater headquarters, congratulating Sherrill and reflecting on the campaign:
“Moments ago, I called and congratulated Mikie Sherrill – and gave her my best wishes in hopefully solving New Jersey. Listen guys, nobody is more disappointed than I am, but I am proud of the efforts of my team that are here tonight.
“As John F. Kennedy once said – life’s not always fair. But I am proud of the effort put forth. I’m proud of the message we communicated each and every day.
“Throughout this campaign, what we talked about is the people of New Jersey no longer living with any insecurity or fear that their children can’t get the education they so rightfully deserve; that their children can’t ultimately get the job of their dreams here; that they can’t start a business here; that they can’t raise a middle-class family here; that they can’t retire here. These are all the things that people are terribly insecure of today here in New Jersey.”
The race was closely watched around the country – New Jersey and Virginia were the only two gubernatorial contests this year – as a potential read on the mood of the electorate a year after Donald Trump won the presidency. And with Murphy unable to seek another term, New Jerseyans knew they would be getting a new governor after eight years. So, the result will reverberate here and across the nation.
From the business community
Much of the campaign was fought over affordability issues, especially the high cost of energy. And business leaders paid close attention to how each candidate approached the issues. – New Jersey Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill

Mikie Sherrill’s victory is a massive repudiation of the Trump administration’s destructive policies. The transition officially began Nov. 5, with Murphy pledging a smooth handoff of responsibilities. The outgoing governor hosted Sherrill for a meeting at the State House in Trenton, tweeting afterwards:
“Welcomed Governor‑elect @MikieSherrill to the State House for our first meeting as we kick off the transition process. I am confident that we are leaving New Jersey in the best hands with Mikie and Dale.”
Murphy added:
“Following the election, I convened my staff to discuss our plans to run through the tape as we close out our time in office. We stand ready to support Governor‑elect @MikieSherrill and her team as they transition into the State House.”
Sherrill announced that Caldwell will serve as chair of her Gubernatorial Transition and Kellie Doucette will serve as the team’s executive director. Caldwell is an experienced leader in education, business and community development. Doucette brings extensive private sector experience in finance and health care – and has held senior leadership roles in government and nonprofits. Most recently, Doucette served as district director in Sherrill’s congressional office.
The governor-elect said that Caldwell and Doucette will lead the effort to ensure a smooth, efficient and effective transition as the new administration gets prepared to take office.
“I am thrilled to have Dale and Kellie leading our transition,” said Sherrill. “Lt. Gov.-elect Caldwell brings an unmatched combination of vision, experience, and dedication to our team, while Kellie’s leadership and management expertise will ensure we hit the ground running. Together, they embody the values of service, integrity, and innovation that will guide our administration.”
“Governor-elect Sherrill represents a new era of leadership for New Jersey — one rooted in collaboration, effectiveness, and action,” said Caldwell, who will oversee the strategic direction of the transition process. “I’m honored to help lead this transition and ensure her administration is ready to deliver for the people of our state from day one.”
“This is an exciting moment for New Jersey,” said Doucette, who will lead the operations of the transition team as it develops policy and personnel recommendations for the incoming administration. “Under Gov.-elect Sherrill’s leadership, we have an opportunity to build a government that works smarter, listens better, and serves every community. I look forward to helping assemble a team that reflects those priorities.”
The Sherrill Transition Team said it will announce additional members and policy advisory committees in the coming weeks.
