Hosting 2026 World Cup Games In NJ Is A ‘Massive Undertaking’
While the next World Cup will feature games throughout North America, no site will host more games than MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. New York New Jersey Stadium, as it will be known during the competition — according to FIFA rules on corporate-named stadiums — is getting ready for eight matches in 2026, including the final.
Members of the Assembly’s tourism committee Monday held a hearing at the Meadowlands about what needs to happen.
“Holding the World Cup final in New Jersey will be a boon to local businesses, including restaurants, shops, hotels and transportation services,” Assemblyman William Moen (D-Camden), said.
“This is a massive, massive undertaking,” said Jeffrey Vasser, executive director of the New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism. “This is a ‘not for the faint of heart’ sort of situation.”
It is estimated the World Cup could bring $2 billion to the region and more than 1 million visitors. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing to move around large groups of people for events like this, including the 2014 Super Bowl.
“We’ve learned from those mistakes,” said Judy Ross, senior director of operations at Meadowlands Chamber and Meadowlands Convention and Visitors Bureau.
