CCSNJ Primary Election Day Recap

Legislative Updates

On June 4, New Jersey held primary elections for the U.S. Senate and all 12 of New Jersey’s seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In the Democratic primary, Tuesday's election featured a new ballot design due to a successful lawsuit that challenged the constitutionality of the former version. Previously, candidates were blocked together based on county party organization endorsements, which critics claimed gave certain candidates an unfair advantage. Now, candidates are blocked by the Office for which they are running. Since the lawsuit sought only to address the Democratic primary, the Republican primary ballot design was not changed.

In the race for U.S. Senate, incumbent Senator Robert Menendez is currently facing criminal charges and chose not to seek the Democratic nomination, instead filing to run as an Independent candidate. For the Democratic nomination, Congressman Andy Kim from the Third Congressional District defeated Patricia Campos-Medina and Larry Hamm. In the November’s General Election, Congressman Kim will face Curtis Bashaw, who won the Republican nomination defeating Albert Harshaw, Justin Murphy, and Christine Serrano Glassner.

As for the South Jersey Congressional races, in the First Congressional District, Democratic incumbent Congressman Donald Norcross ran unopposed. Theodore Liddell won the Republican nomination, defeating Claire Gustafson and Damon Galdo.

In the Second Congressional District, Republican incumbent Congressman Jeff Van Drew ran unopposed. The Democratic primary race remains too close to call, with Joseph Salerno leading Tim Alexander by a few hundred votes.

In the Third Congressional District Democratic primary, longtime Assemblyman Herb Conaway defeated his District Mate Assemblywoman Carol Murphy, as well as newcomers Joe Cohn, Sarah Schoengood and Brian Schkeeper. In the Republican primary, Rajesh Mohan was declared the winner beating out Shirley Maia-Cusick.
