CCSNJ Successful in Advocating for South Jersey Transportation Funding

Legislative Updates

On Wednesday, August 20, the Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey (CCSNJ) hosted Governor Phil Murphy at an event featuring a fireside chat with Tom Bergeron, Founder, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of BINJE. The event, which was attended by approximately 150 CCSNJ members, was focused on the Governor’s tenure in office and how his Administration has aided the region over the past eight years.

During the event, Governor Murphy made a major announcement, which directly aligned with CCSNJ’s advocacy measures over recent months. Specifically, the Governor outlined a variety of transportation initiatives that impact South Jersey:

$5 million dedication of federal funds for a variety of micro transit routes to fill service gaps across the region.

Eight new electric buses for the City of Camden.

A new bus route from Vineland to Atlantic City to aide residents in getting to and from employment opportunities, including the casinos.

Throughout the FY2026 state budget process, the CCSNJ strongly advocated for the equitable distribution of Corporate Transit Fee (CTF) dollars to ensure South Jersey receives its fair share of transportation investments. Although the $5 million in funding is not from the CTF, the dedication of federal funds to enhance mass transit options for residents and employees demonstrates the CCSNJ’s advocacy was effective and recognized by the Governor. Importantly, Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald was instrumental in securing this funding, further underscoring his longstanding commitment to advancing South Jersey’s transportation needs. Without question, these new investments will strengthen regional mobility, increase access to jobs, healthcare opportunities and educational institutions across South Jersey.

Christina M. Renna, President & CEO, CCSNJ issued the following statement on the announcement:

“South Jersey’s transportation challenges are not just well-known; they are critical and escalating. The reality is that as you travel further south, mass transit options diminish significantly. The Chamber has been a relentless advocate for enhanced transportation solutions throughout the region, fighting for vital infrastructure investments and filling service gaps. The Governor’s announcement addresses these pressing issues directly and we are incredibly grateful for his responsiveness to our Chamber’s concerns.”

The CCSNJ looks forward to participating in future conversations with the Administration to ensure service gaps from Cape May to Burlington Counties are addressed, and appreciates Governor Murphy’s commitment to dedicating funding for regional transportation initiatives following last year’s passage of the CTF.
