Governor Murphy Delivers the State of the State Address

On January 12, Governor Phil Murphy delivered the State of the State Address, broadcast virtually for the first time in state history due to the pandemic. The address opened with stories from various business owners and residents on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the speech, the Governor highlighted some of the goals he accomplished during his first three years in office, including enacting the $15 minimum wage and passing the millionaires taxboth of which the CCSNJ opposed, and the newly signed tax incentive programswhich the CCSNJ supported. The Governor renewed his call for transparency and ethics reforms in government as well as his goal of a 100 percent clean energy economy by 2050. He highlighted the importance of the South Jersey Wind Port in accomplishing that goal, which will create up to 2,000 union jobs, and make NJ an offshore wind-energy leader.

The Governor stated his desire to expand access to democracy by enacting early, in-person voting.

Christina M. Renna, President & CEO released the following statement on the address: “The Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey (CCSNJ) was pleased to hear Governor Murphy’s emphasis on the business community’s recovery from the pandemic, particularly the continued impact on small businesses and restaurants. With this in mind, the CCSNJ is hopeful that the Governor will begin to address the state’s affordability issues in 2021 that continue to be a barrier for businesses’ ability to recover and oppose any additional mandates and tax increases in 2021, which directly impact residents and small businesses alike. The CCSNJ stands ready to work with the Administration on policies that will put all businesses and New Jerseyans on the path to economic recovery.” To view the address, click here.
