Governor Murphy Announces Local COVID Curfew Discretion

219th Legislative Session COVID-19 Legislative Updates Legislative Updates

On November 12, Governor Murphy announced municipalities and counties will be granted the discretion to impose curfews for non-essential businesses as early as 8pm. Municipal or county actions, such as restrictions on essential businesses, full business closures, or restrictions on gatherings/capacity that differ from statewide rules, are impermissible and will be invalidated.

Previously, no municipality, or county, could enact any order or rule which could conflict with any of the provisions of the Executive Orders.

The Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey (CCSNJ) applauds the Governor for recognizing the the best way to combat the virus is through a localized approach that takes into account the local health data and we urge the Governor to continue this approach by allowing municipalities to have the discretion to lift restrictions when the data allows it.
