Cape May County Chamber of Commerce Hosting NJ PACT Seminar

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection plans to release new Coastal Zone Management rules in line with New Jersey Protecting Against Climate Threats (NJ PACT) regulatory mandates. The NJPACT rule proposals add climate change protections that will greatly impact future development in the Coastal Zone requiring NJDEP permits including, residential development (such as single and multi-family homes), commercial development (such as office and retail buildings) and public development (such as roads, sanitary sewer pipelines and fire stations).

Among other rule changes these regulations will mandate development adhere to sea level rise (SLR) projections to the year 2100. The NJDEP rule proposal includes a "Climate Adjusted Flood Elevation," (CAFÉ) that will expand the regulated tidal flood area by adding an additional 5 feet to the FEMA 100-year flood elevation. New development and critical infrastructure will be required to have the first floor to be constructed 1 foot above the new "Climate Adjusted Flood Elevation" (CAFÉ). New regulated Inundation Risk Zones (IRZ) will be added in the coastal zone. To allow NJDEP to better track cumulative impacts the rules will replace "permits-by-rule" with a "permits-by-registration" system.

- Learn first-hand from NJDEP representatives Vincent Mazzei - State Flood Plan Administrator and Deputy Commissioner Sean Moriarty who will offer a presentation of the proposed rules.

- District 1 New Jersey Senator Michael Testa and District 2 New Jersey Senator Vince Polistina will follow the presentation to discuss the economic and social challenges these rules will have on their   respective Legislative Districts.

- A Q&A session will conclude the program.
