RE:                           Support for S-3460 (Pou/Ruiz)

DATE: January 26, 2023

The Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey (CCSNJ) would like to voice our support for S-3460 (Pou/Ruiz) which establishes a certification program for businesses owned by LGBTQ+ persons and codifies into law the program established by Governor Murphy in Executive Order No. 295 (2022).

This bill reflects one of the CCSNJ’s core values: to foster an inclusive community that embraces the diversity of the companies, organizations, and individuals we serve. Currently, minority-owned, women-owned, veteran-owned, and disabled-veteran-owned businesses can certify with the Division of Revenue in the Department of the Treasury that their business is owned by members of an underrepresented community. S-3460 (Pou/Ruiz) enables businesses owned by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or other persons who do not identify as heterosexual or cisgender to similarly  certify their businesses with the Division. Additionally, this bill will expand access to public and private contracting opportunities for the LGBTQ+  community.

This bill is vital to creating and fostering a more equitable and diverse business environment in New Jersey. Enabling the certification of businesses as LGBTQ+-owned will enhance the visibility and highlight the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, this bill will ensure more equitable access to bids and contracts and better reflect the diversity of the entire business community. S-3460 (Pou/Ruiz) will also make New Jersey a more attractive place to do businesses by affirming that LGBTQ+ business owners are welcome and encouraged to conduct business in the state.

The CCSNJ applauds the sponsors’ efforts to create a more inclusive space for LGTBQ+ employees and customers alike.

Thank you for the opportunity to share our support for S-3460 (Pou/Ruiz).
