Job Overview/Summary

The Dean is responsible for providing strategic intellectual leadership and for working effectively with faculty, staff, collective bargaining units, and other stakeholders on the School’s positioning and operations, including all program and personnel activities both within the School of General Studies, and with stakeholders from across the university. Such leadership will include developing a Strategic Plan for the School to align with the University’s new plan, working with faculty housed in all other Schools who are serving as interdisciplinary minor Coordinators, and working with the General Studies Committee of the Faculty Senate. Additionally, the Dean serves as a member of the Dean’s Council and the Provost’s Academic Affairs Council.

In particular, the new Dean will reposition the School of General Studies to be the student success entry point for new and continuing students, with an emphasis on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, and best practices for student academic success for the development of a First Year Academic Experience. They will transition Advising into the School to join an interdisciplinary First-Year Studies program with over 20 full-time faculty, interdisciplinary minors, the Tutoring Center, and General Education (including Stockton’s interdisciplinary General Studies courses to which most full-time faculty contribute, First-Year Seminars, and Writing and Quantitative Reasoning across the Disciplines programs, and dual credit) in a manner that maximizes efficiency and effectiveness around student success and retention. Other units will be under consideration for reporting to the School as part of ongoing reorganization of Academic Affairs, and based on the experience and qualifications of the new Dean.

The Dean’s office includes an Assistant Dean and administrative staff. The new Dean of General Studies takes office with a charge to support and advance the continued excellence of the School and its commitment to a General Education curriculum that is foundational to Stockton University’s academic mission. Benefiting from a dedicated and passionate faculty, the Dean will provide vision and creative guidance to the School to assure that it maintains its ongoing strengths. At the same time, the Dean must provide transparent and authentic leadership, rooted in a deep and abiding appreciation for lifelong learning and a desire to serve students.

Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of the William T. Daly School of General Studies is expected to provide leadership and vision; foster high-quality academic programs; prioritize student academic success; establish new relationships and enhance existing partnerships with community stakeholders; develop and support faculty and staff; provide faculty with support for academic programs including the development of new programs and the redesign of existing ones to meet student need; increase enrollment in academic programs housed in the School of General Studies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • An ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership to further a shared strategic vision
  • Proven ability to fundraise, secure external programmatic funding, and establish internal and external partnerships that benefit the institution, student learning, and the community
  • Excellent people management skills and community building experience, including the abilities to inspire innovation and bring people together to work toward a common goal, leading with transparency and authenticity
  • Strong written, oral, interpersonal and fiscal management skills

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate or terminal degree
  • A minimum of three (3) years of significant and varied academic leadership experience closely related to areas of Deans’ responsibilities
  • Has achieved tenure at an accredited institution and is eligible for appointment to Associate Professor or Full Professor in a program at Stockton

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to the value of a liberal arts education in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Demonstrates success supporting a school or other similarly sized academic unit with a commitment to shared governance, open communication, and collaboration in a unionized environment
  • Demonstrates a track record of leadership in support of student success
  • Demonstrates evidence of a data driven decision making
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively manage unit-wide budgets
  • Possesses a scholarly background and/or interdisciplinary research in an academic field offered at Stockton
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including proven success in promoting a positive, inclusive and collaborative teaching and learning environment
  • Demonstrates success supporting a teacher-scholar model of faculty development
