Brief Job Overview/Summary

This position will maintain hazardous waste areas, instrumentation, chemical inventory; will support and enforce safety and compliance.

Descriptions of Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Director of Academic Laboratories and Field Facilities,
responsibilities include:

  • Maintain the hazardous waste areas and compliance requirements.
  • Enforce the proper labeling of all chemical compounds in accordance with the requirements of the Hazard Communication Standard, NJ Right to Know Act and Solid Waste Management Act.
  • Support and enforces the OSHA Lab Standard and all pertinent safety regulations in accordance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan and Exposure Control Plan.
  • Assist NAMS’ Radiation Safety Officer in maintaining the appropriate inventories of radionuclide materials and participate in facilities inspections.
  • Assist in maintenance of NAMS’ Chemical Inventory control system which is required under present compliance for chemical use and storage.
  • Conduct annual safety regulation training and record keeping in the NAMS laboratories.
  • Maintain, calibrate, service, and track the inventory of the current status of all research and teaching scientific instruments including, but not limited to, NMR spectrometers, GC-MS, Capillary DNA sequencer, HPLC, AA, UV-VIS and FT-IR spectrometers.
  • Perform simple diagnostic and repair procedures of electronic or mechanical problems; schedules and coordinates all necessary manufacturers’ technical and repair service.
  • Coordinate with ITS to maintain and perform software upgrades of peripherals including computers, printers and controllers.
  • Serves as staff support to NAMS’ Bio-Safety Committee, Radiation Safety Committee, and Bio-Hazard Committee.
  • When needed, complete chemical/biology reagent preparation for laboratory courses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Academic Laboratory and Field Facilities or the Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field

    NOTE:
    Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester-hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

    • Five (5) years of professional experience in one or combination of the following: data processing, installation and maintenance of application programs, technical support, and/or design and preparation of programs.
      OR
    • Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.

      NOTE:
      "Professional experience" refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry
  • Experience with analytical instrumentation
